There are many political studies on the Reconstruction after the Civil War, but few economic studies. (1) It is understandable considering the southern states were reincorporated back into the union and there were millions of new citizens who were forced into slavery. New amendments to the Constitution were added to grant these former slaves, citizenship and grant them the rights and benefits of such citizenship. (2)
